REDD in Tambopata National Reserve and Bahuaja-Sonene National Park

Summary

This project is being implemented in an area of the Tambopata National Reserve (RNTAMB) and the Bahuaja-Sonene National Park (PNBS) in the region of Madre de Dios. The area is under a Contract of Administration signed between the Peruvian State and the Association for Research and Integral Development (Asociación  para la Investigación y Desarrollo Integral; AIDER). The two protected areas cover a combined total area of 573,299 hectares. The main objective of the project is reduce land use change in the protected area buffer zone through the promotion of sustainable economic activities and the establishment of conservation agreements in identified critical areas. 

The project is strengthening the system of Control and Surveillance of the two protected areas, in particular through the establishment of official communal surveillance committees. This also increases local participation in protected area management. 

The project is providing technical support to the National Service of Natural Protected Areas (SERNANP) and the regional forest authority of Madre de Dios to strengthen environmental and forest governance in the region. In this way, the project aims to enhance governmental presence and collaboration with local communities in management of the protected areas. Bosques Amazónicos ​is also involved in the project. It is responsible for financing the design and implementation of the project. 

It is expected that the project will achieve total net emissions reductions of 4,577,502 CO2e during the first accounting period of ten years. The project was initiated in January, 2009, with the crediting period taking place between July 2010 and June 2030. 

The project has been certified by Rainforest Alliance according to the Climate, Community and Biodiversity Standard and the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) (validated to CCB Standards Second Edition, Climate Adaptation & Biodiversity Gold Level in June 2012). The project issued its first Verified Carbon Units (VCUs) under the VCS in September 2013.
