Emiti Nibwo Bulora

Initiative

Summary

The Emiti Nibwo Bulora Afforestation/Reforestation (A/R) project involves small scale farmers in tree planting activities to mitigate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and climate change in the Kagera region in western Tanzania. The programme supports small scale farmers to learn about and engage in tree planting and other land use management techniques that are both sustainable and deliver economic and social benefits. The primary objective of the project is to "improve living conditions for farmer households in Kagera region". As part of achieving this objective it is expected that farmers will increase their adaptive capacity to climate change and other shocks by diversifying their food supply and marketable products through agroforestry and improved land management techniques. Additionally, contributions from carbon generated revenues are anticipated to improve the household economy of the individual farm household. The project undertakes awareness raising and training about land-use management, marketing techniques and opportunities related to agroforestry and carbon sequestration, but stress that participating farmers are the owners and implementers of the on-farm Plan Vivos (land management plans). Additionally, farmers are encouraged to form farmers associations and groups to improve access to capacity building services and markets. The project developers and main facilitators of implementation are Vi Agrofrestry and the Plan Vivo Foundation.
