Summary

GIZ has been working in the Pacific Region over the last three decades. The projects being implemented by GIZ in the region are managed out of offices in Manila in the Philippines and Suva in Fiji. The Pacific Region is extremely vulnerable to the threats posed by climate change. In response to the challenges facing the region, the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU) have commissioned GIZ to work on two regional projects: ‘Climate Protection through Forest Conservation in the Pacific Island Countries’ and ‘Coping with Climate Change in the Pacific Island Region’.

GIZ is working closely with local and regional organisations, such as the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC), in the implementation of these projects. Through these projects, GIZ is playing a significant role in increasing the capacities of the Pacific Island states to address climate change.
