Carbon Offset

Definition

A reduction in emissions of carbon dioxide or greenhouse gases made in order to compensate for, or to ‘offset’, an emission made elsewhere. Once certified by the regulatory body, a carbon offset can be sold as a carbon credit and linked with official emission trading schemes, such as the EU ETS. One offset is equivalent to an emission reduction of one metric tonne of CO2e.
