Summary

This law provides for the management and control of village land. The main purpose of this Act is to recognize and secure customary rights in land, the main target being rural communities. Under the previous land law regime, the rights of local community members' had been placed at the periphery. This was amended with the Village Act (1999) where which places all village land under the management and control of village governments. The transfer of ownership and control over village land is strictly regulated under this law to protect the interest of local communities from unscrupulous dealers.
