Hiniduma Bio-link Project

Initiative

Summary

The Hiniduma Bio-link Project involves the reforestation and enrichment of deforested and degraded forest land of 15 smallholder farmers in Hiniduma, Galle on the edge of the Singhara and Kanneliya rainforest, which are World Heritage Forests.

The project is under the co-management of the Conservation Carbon Company and Rainforest Rescue International. Much of the technical work has been performed by the Carbon Consulting Company and the University of Sabaragamuwa.

The smallholdings are predominantly made up of tea plantations, with the remaining land cover being home gardens and remnant forest patches. The project has involved the planting of 94 tree species of both economic and biodiversity value. The project area is 18.8 hectares in total, which forms a contiguous corridor between Polgahakanda and Kanneliya, two remnant rainforest patches.

The project has been implemented according to Plan Vivo methodologies and has been certified to the Plan Vivo standard since July 2012. The project was established using funds from Rainforest Rescue International, with future funding expected to come from the sale of Plan Vivo certificates.

Forest Management

Under this project, community benefits such as agricultural training, plantation management payments and support for crop diversification are provided. It is also expected that farmers will increase their household income by 25 percent within the first three years due to value-added crops and multiple cropping cycles.
