Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food (Mexico)
The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food (Secretaría de Agricultura, Ganadería, Desarrollo Rural, Pesca y Alimentación; SAGARPA) is an executive branch of the Government of Mexico. It is responsible for supporting agricultural production policies, leveraging competitive advantage within the agriculture, livestock and fisheries sectors, integrating rural activities and encouraging the collaboration of producer organisations within programmes and projects.
It will play one of the most important roles with regards to REDD+, in conjunction with the Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources (Secretaría de Medio Ambiente y Recursos Naturales; SEMARNAT), as land use change for agricultural activities and the forestry sector are prominent in driving deforestation and forest degradation in the country. SAGARPA has a number of different programmes focussing on rural development. It is a member of the Interministerial Climate Change Commission and presides the Interministerial Rural Sustainable Development Commission.
