Summary

It is important to recognize community participation in forest protection and sustainable forest management. An effective consultation process will strengthen community rights while promoting conservation of biodiversity. The forest policies already in place in Kenya do recognize that there are benefits arising from the involvement of local communities and other stakeholders in forest management; they also emphasize the importance of forests for water and biodiversity conservation and addresses benefit sharing. It is critical that this approach is carried over into any discussions and decisions about REDD projects, and fully implemented.
