Summary

When it comes to forest carbon projects, carbon property is an issue that remain unresolved: can the carbon truly be “owned”? When assuming that carbon is a tradable commodity, three main issues need to be clarified: the land tenure, the “individuation” (definition of the unit to be traded) and the rights associated with ownership of this unit. The different social and institutionnal contexts around the world will have a strong impact on how forest carbon is viewed.
