Summary
The Protected Areas Act was passed by Guyana's National Assembly in July 2011. The Act provides for the protection and conservation of Guyana’s natural heritage and natural capital and maintenance of ecosystem services. It provides for the establishment of a protected areas commission, the creation of national protected areas system and the establishment of a protected areas trust fund.
Enshrined in the Act are penalties for individuals who invade a protected area without the permission from the Commissioner or the Minister. Second time offenders will be fined five hundred thousand dollars, two millions dollars and one hundred thousand dollars based on the situation and third time offenders can face up to five years imprisonment.
