REDD+ Readiness Preparation Support (Nepal)
Nepal began to engage with the Forest Carbon Partnership Facility (FCPF) in 2008 and began the implementation of REDD Readiness in Nepal began in 2010. The Readiness Preparation Proposal (R-PP) for 2011 - 2013 aims to (amongst other things):
- develop and align the national REDD+ strategy with Nepal's overall development strategy;
- enhance coordination between different sectors and government agencies, by ensuring multi-stakeholder involvement in decision-making and building the capacity of multi-stakeholder institutions at all levels.
The majoirty of the FCPF grant funding will be allocated to developing reference scenarios and MRV. The Finnish funded Forest Resource Assessment will be developing reference emissions levels and will conduct a historical analysis of emissions and removals for the period 1994-2012.
Nepal participates as a pilot country in the development Social and Environmental Standards (SES) through the Climate, Community and Biodiversity Alliance (CCBA).
A Finnish-funded Forest Resource Assessment (FRA) is in the third year of implementation (to be completed by 2014). The FRA performs many technical activities instrumental to the development of a national MRV system, including forest mapping and detailed carbon measurements for selected sites.
