Developing a concept for a reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation activity in the Adelbert Mountains

The Nature Conservancy (TNC) proposes to synthesize knowledge about emerging best practice and experience in community–based conservation agreements to inform the development of a national REDD framework in Papua New Guinea. This will include: (1) collaboratively analysing the strengths and weaknesses of existing landholder conservation agreements in Papua New Guinea; and (2) working with partners and local stakeholders to identify the nature of incentives and equitable delivery mechanisms needed to secure benefits linked to effective forest conservation and management agreements with landholders and the different levels of government. As an illustrative case study of action on the ground, TNC will demonstrate lessons learned from the experience of over a decade working with partners on community–based conservation agreements in the Adelbert Mountains, Madang Province.
