April Salumei Sustainable Forest Management Project, East Sepik

The April Salumei Sustainable Forest Management Project is a pilot REDD+ project within a Forest Management Area (FMA) established by the PNG Forestry Authority. The total area is 521,000 ha with a total production area of 177,200ha for designated logging and a net production area of 150,620 ha. The project will avoid the emission of 98,441,367 tonnes of Carbon Dioxide equivalent (CO2e) over the project life of 25 years. The project is being proposed by Rainforest Project Management Ltd. (under the Pacific Forest Alliance), who are responsible for the development and commercialisation of the project, and are utilising the services of it's parent organisation, the Pacific Forest Alliance, the knowledge of local institutions such as Papua New Guinea Forest Research Institute and the University of Papua New Guinea. Rainforest Project Management Ltd. have recently engaged Environmental Accounting Services to provide technical resources in estimation the carbon stocks in the project area.

The project was received validation by the Climate, Community and Biodiversity (CCB) Standards Second Edition, Biodiversity Gold Level, in June 2011.
