Peruvian Amazon Research Institute (Peru)
The Peruvian Amazon Research Institute (IIAP) is an institution devoted to scientific and technological research for development, which specialises in the sustainable use of biodiversity of the Amazon region, and performs its activities in a decentralised manner by promoting participation of public and private institutions, and civil society. Placed under the authority of the Ministry of the Environment, the institute is an autonomous body of internal public law, with 27 years of uninterrupted work for the benefit of Amazon populations. Its scope of influence is the entire geographical area of the Amazon basin of Peru, covering an approximate extension of 760,000 Km2, which is 60% of the national territory. IIAP has a research programme in integrated forest management and environmental services. Its main function is to preserve the functionality of forests for the sustainable provision of environmental goods and services for the benefit of the Amazonian population. In this sense, IIAP has implemented deforestation monitoring projects and environmental education projects in the Amazon, among others.
